Has your coaxial connector been tested for dielectric withstand voltage?

The dielectric withstand voltage test is also called the dielectric strength test. It determines the insulation safety of the connector by applying a certain voltage between the connector contact piece and the contact piece, between the contact piece and the housing, within a specified time, and observing whether the connector is operating safely. In fact, the dielectric pressure resistance of the connector is mainly affected by three factors: insulation material, cleanliness, and humidity.

1) Insulation material

The choice of insulating engineering plastics is an important factor that affects the product's voltage resistance performance indicators. If PEJ (polyphenylene ether vitriol) special engineering plastic with a breakdown voltage of 16KV/mm is selected, it can meet the requirements of GJB598 environment-resistant quick-separation circular electrical connector YB series II product with a withstand voltage of 1500V under standard atmospheric pressure. Fluoroplastics (F4) have higher dielectric withstand voltage and insulation resistance than other materials, and are widely used to make insulators for coaxial radio frequency electrical connectors.

2) Connector cleanliness

The internal and surface cleanliness of the connector insulator has a great influence on the dielectric withstand voltage. When there are impurities inside and on the surface of the connector, the conductivity of the conductor will change, causing the entire connector to be broken down, making the product unusable.

3) Humidity

An increase in humidity will reduce the media withstand voltage. For example, the technical conditions of the J36A rectangular electrical connector are specified; the withstand voltage is 1000V under normal conditions, and the withstand voltage drop is 500V after the 40±2℃, 93±3%, 48h damp heat test. Therefore, if the product is used in a special environment, you should communicate with the connector manufacturer in advance to avoid unsatisfactory results.
