In the NIO accident, Tesla was investigated. Are consumers self-driving guinea pigs?

Do you know autonomous driving? Do you understand this technology? Would you choose to enable this technology in your car? With all kinds of hands-free, autonomous driving, and even "unmanned driving" sales techniques, is this technology reliable?

At 2 p.m. on August 12, 2021, Lin Wenqin, a catering entrepreneur, died in a traffic accident on the Hanjiang section of Shenhai Expressway while driving a NIO car with the automatic driving function (NOP pilot status). Aroused a lot of questions from netizens.

Coincidentally, on the second day of the accident, that is, on August 13, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would launch a formal investigation into Tesla's autonomous driving system Autopilot. To determine its relevance to 11 auto-driving car accidents.

Although it is in different countries and different brands, the discussion on the safety of autonomous driving is becoming more and more intense.

As early as last July, the Munich court in Germany ruled on allegations that Tesla's Autopilot and Fully Automated Driving (FSD) functions misled consumers, and considered Tesla's promises to be "unrealistic." Directly refer to Tesla's false propaganda and mislead consumers. In the domestic questionnaire, when 30% of car owners face the "autonomous driving" promoted by the company, their first instinct is to understand that they can let the car drive by itself.

There is no doubt that there is a difference between the general perception of ordinary consumers and the objective facts. It can even be said that this kind of confusion and misleading has become the norm in the industry.

For example, Weilai and Xiaopeng choose to use similar "NOP" and "NGP" to avoid the standard classification of autonomous driving technology. Some car manufacturers also use words such as L2.5 level autopilot, high-level autopilot, intelligent takeover, and hands free for publicity. As a result, car owners have insufficient awareness of the risks of autonomous vehicles. There have even been incidents in which the driver was killed in a car accident while watching a movie in the car after turning on the autopilot.

It is also not uncommon for car owners to spontaneously “play” such as “not touching the steering wheel”, “emptying the brain”, “drinking while driving” and so on.

In response to this chaos, Li Xiang, the founder of Ideal Motors, posted an article in Moments, calling on the media and industry organizations to unify the standards for Chinese terms for autonomous driving, and to clarify the standard translation of L1-L5 commonly used in the industry. Avoid using exaggerated words to cause misunderstandings.

In terms of current technology and regulations, autonomous driving is still a false proposition. However, in the foreseeable future, as sensors and computing power become higher and higher, the era of autonomous driving that is safer than human driving will inevitably come.

However, when the technology is not yet fully mature, drivers, passengers, and passers-by are all paying for the development of technology. Under this circumstance, the maturity of social consensus and the implementation of regulations and supervision are of vital importance.
