Explanation of common insulator materials for connectors

The connector insulator is used to fix the contact terminals of the male and female main bodies of the connector to keep the normal spacing and position, and to keep the terminals from loosening and rotating. In principle, the insulator should be made of a material with better flame resistance, because the terminal will generate heat when passing current, so the melting and failure of the insulator must be considered under long-term use.

At present, materials such as PBT, NYLON, ABS, PC, LCP, etc. are usually used in the market, and their properties have their own characteristics.

1.PBT material:

PBT has the ability to resist cracking, impact and electricity. It has good wear resistance, low friction coefficient, good self-lubricating effect, and good oil resistance and chemical resistance. It has good dielectric strength under high temperature and high humidity. Its shrinkage rate is between 0.6% and 3.0%, and its temperature resistance is about 230°C. Good formability and flame resistance. It is a common rubber compound for connector products.

2. NYLON66, NYLON6T

Nylon has good toughness, self-lubrication, chemical resistance and wear resistance. The heat deflection temperature is 290 degrees Celsius, which is ideal for SMT connectors.

3. ABS material

ABS has good impact toughness, oil resistance and wear resistance. Easy to form, good rigidity and rigidity. The temperature resistance is about 100°C, and it is generally used in auxiliary products in connectors.

4. LCP

LCP is a material with very good electrical insulating properties, which can maintain its electrical properties at 200 to 300 °C continuously without being affected, and can reach a temperature of 316 °C with intermittent use. In addition, LCP has very strong corrosion resistance, and will not suffer any corrosion in 90% acid or 50% alkaline environment.
