Three types of failure modes of connectors

As an important electronic component, connectors bear the responsibility of signal connection and power transmission within and between systems. Therefore, there may be varying degrees of failure during long-term use. Its failure modes can be roughly divided into three types: contact failure, insulation failure, and mechanical connection failure.
Contact failure
The structure of a connector mainly consists of contacts, shielding layer, housing, and accessories. Among them, the contact point is responsible for transmitting electrical energy and is the main weak link that causes electrical contact failure. Therefore, the reasons for electrical contact failure are generally insufficient contact pressure and contact wear. Environmental vibration, eccentric insertion, metal deformation, foreign object interference, and other reasons can all lead to poor contact and increased contact resistance of connectors, resulting in contact failure.
Insulation failure
In special environments, the surface of connectors may produce ion conductive channels formed by the fusion of moist and corrosive substances with the surface water film, leading to insulation failure. The main reason for this result is that the insulation surface of some connectors is difficult to clean and the environment is excessively humid. Therefore, during the selection process, it is necessary to fully communicate with the connector manufacturer about the product's usage environment to avoid malfunctions.
Mechanical connection failure
Mechanical connection failure refers to the damage of a connector due to environmental and mechanical stress, which affects normal insertion and removal. Mechanical connection failures often expose problems during use. For products with high requirements, early screening and evaluation testing can be carried out to improve the reliability of use.
